Straight A Student| Seventeen Year Old Student Inspired by the Metaphysics of Yin and Yang, design Works Highly Regarded by UNSW Professors

Release Date: 2017-02-17

There is a teenager in Nanjing Foreign Language School Xianlin Campus,

who has been interested in Architecture since he was a child.

He has studied many architectural works around the world,

and has copied the works he likes over and over again.

Ever since Guan Haoting told his parents “I want to be an architect”,

he was destined to study in the Design Stream of the UNSW Foundation Studies in Nanjing Foreign Language School Xianlin Campus.

He stayed focused on his dream all the way.

Even when other students pursued so-called “popular majors”,

he did not stray from his path.

Upon finishing the one-year design course,

Guan Haoting has a better understanding on beauty and design.

Whilst preparing his design assignment set in Xuanwu Lake,

he stated“I want to express the INFINITE,

just like the Yin and Yang in the Chinese metaphysics which states that life is bred in the changeable world.”

Inspired by this, he used triangles to represent reality and Yan, and arcs to represent the abstract and Yin, which combines the strong and weak.

Besides having three different modules running through the whole part, Yin and Yang fuse perfectly.

Standing in front of the sculpture, many memories come to mind such as mother holding our hands to buy us a bottle of cold soda; and friends coming out to see the beautiful scene of Xuanwu Lake after the rain.

Even Professors from UNSW speak highly of this work; they think it is the best work they have received this year.

On November 2016, Guan Haoting donated this work to his Alma Mater - Nanjing Foreign Language School Xianlin Campus.

Guan is now living in Australia and studying a 5 year Architectural Design Program at the University of Melbourne. When it comes to his future academic life, he keeps a humble outlook towards his academic success. Guan said he will continue to study diligently with the hope of passing all his future exams.
